About Us
Horn Head Pet Sanctuary is run on a voluntary basis by me, Annette Hunter. I do not receive any external funding from any source. Since I am unable to work anymore, due to my incurable pain condition, I now have to ask for donations to help fund my pet sanctuary. When I was working as a doctor I never had to ask for donations so I apologise that I now have to literally beg for help with funding my pet sanctuary. This is not a nice place to be in. Please help me to save my pet sanctuary.
All of my time is spent running the sanctuary and waiting for the right moment to get the right photograph. I try to sell my photos via my web site to generate an income to fund the costs of looking after my rescued animals – food, hay, worming doses/vaccinations, vet, farrier, equine dentistry bills and so on. I specialise in animal and landscape photography. I also write in The Diary section when the mood takes me and I write about my animals, rarely about myself. I write as I think – nothing fancy, just simple thoughts. My animals need my care, my presence and my love. My animals are my pets. I do not breed from any of them as they are here to rest and relax in a loving safe environment. I am surrounded by the most beautiful scenery you could imagine and having my beautiful pets at my side makes me truly content. I want to share this beautiful life with you and if you like Nature then you are on the right website!

Do you love animals? Are you tired of city life? Do you yearn to be in the country? Would you like to escape for a while to a land of rugged beauty? If you answered “yes” to these questions then this site is for you. May this site be a virtual holiday for you. Welcome!
Horn Head Pet Sanctuary is a double dream come true. Since I was
a child I have wanted 2 things in life:
1. To live in my “Auntie Mary’s cottage” on Horn Head, Donegal.
2. To have my own pet sanctuary.
In December 2005, by a miracle, I managed to buy my “Auntie Mary’s cottage” on Horn Head and when I moved in during July 2006, I immediately got to work on setting up my own pet sanctuary. It has been a very busy time since then but it is easy to be busy when you are doing what you love to do. I still wake up some mornings and find it hard to believe I am really here! But joy and sorrow often stand close together. All was going well till May 2007 when I was diagnosed with Neuropathic Pain (NP). This meant I had to give up working as a medical doctor. So hard times set in as I am self employed. Now my “dream home” is up for sale. I achieved my dream only to have it dashed by NP. For more info on NP visit The Irish Chronic Pain Association Website. I never envisaged NP coming down the tracks. It has turned my life into a disaster zone. I stand to loose all I have created here. It is all too devastating to talk about and so I rarely mention it when I write in the Diary Section. I want to write about my beautiful pets but in truth I worry constantly that I will now loose them. A reality too hard to bear. If I loose them, I loose me. They are my life.
My life has always centered on animals. I love their touch, the smell of their coats, the noises they make, their different facial expressions, their deep dark eyes and their long peaceful sighs.
My Grandfather, John Hunter, was from Ards, Creeslough, Co. Donegal and so my father, Vincent Hunter, or “Vinnie” as he was called, spent his childhood here. It was my father who introduced me to Donegal. My mother and father spent their honeymoon in this cottage as my father’s Auntie Mary lived here with her husband Charlie. We spent all our holidays in Donegal and I spent many a holiday here in this cottage with Mary and Charlie. I always referred to this cottage as “Auntie Mary’s cottage” even though technically she was my Grand Aunt. It was here on Horn Head that I first set eyes on a donkey as Charlie had a donkey to carry turf from the mountains. It was love at first sight for me – I’m not sure if the donkey felt the same though! He seemed more interested in sleeping after a long day at the bog! Read
