I am pleased to report that Pepe and Scruffy are doing well.
Pepe's wound is healing well. Very lucky. Scruffy is not limping now. Very lucky.

Pepe and Scruffy get sick in the same week
Last week I was busy minding Pepe and Scruffy. They are doing good now. Off to the vet tomorrow again with Pepe. What would we all do without the great vets

Scruffy bites the lock off the stables door
I brought Scruffy and Pixie into the stables as I was waiting on Linda Thompson, from The Donkey Sanctuary, to do a home check. Off I went to the shops to grab

The Diary

19 February 2010

I am sorry to have more bad news to report.

I was waiting to see how Bengy was doing and sadly no matter how hard Vet Louanne Hunt tried, Bengy could not recover from his huge burn wounds.

He had terrible pain if anyone touched the area where he was burnt. He was due to go back to the UCD Vet Hospital for Louanne to work on him more but he simply refused to go into the horse box. He became so agitated and frightened and it was so sad to see Bengy in such emotional stress not to mention his physical pain.

I realised with the wise help of Vet Louanne that Bengy would never really live a life free from pain. I could not do this to Bengy. He would always be stressed if he lived in pain. The slightest touch to his back area would cause him to panic and get very agitated. That is no way for a beautiful animal to live.

Bengy was put to sleep yesterday. He will suffer no more emotional or physical pain.

He was so beautiful. Oh God it was so hard to let him go but it was not fair on Bengy to leave him live a life of pain and stress.

All I know is that between Beverly from The Irish Horse Welfare Trust, Vet Louanne Hunt from the UCD Vet Hospital and me - we did all we could to try and save Bengy. We did our best but sadly it was not possible to save the poor soul.

Bengy now you are safe and you will suffer no more. I loved you and I always will.

My dear Bengy, you poor soul. You beautiful soul.

Now graze in the fields above with Jenny and Dotty and Buttons. They will all take care of you and you will live a happy life with no pain. That is my gift to you Bengy. I wish I could have given you a good life here at Horn Head Pet Sanctuary where you would have known what it is to be loved and adored - but you are loved and adored and you are now pain free.

I will never forget you Bengy and I look forward to meeting you again and looking into your beautiful eyes. I will kiss you as I kissed you before you were put to sleep.

Be free of pain and be free to roam the fields with Jenny. Jenny is gentle and she will protect you. Buttons will be by your side too and Buttons will shower you with love. Dotty will be glad to have another horse companion. You can mind Dotty for me as Dotty was very fragile and she will need your strong frame to protect her. You are now at peace with beautiful companions: Buttons, Jenny and Dotty.

Till me meet again my beautiful Bengy

I love you

Annette
